Solidarity in Europe, Solidarity in the World

Solidarity in Europe, Solidarity in the World

Author: Vera Koronaki This article is part of GEJ’s special ‘print edition’ which you can download or order from www.gef.eu. This print edition maps green debates in four topics that are crucial to Europe’s future:  sustainability, solidarity, hospitality and federalism. This article discusses solidarity: how we define it beyond the national and utilitarian limits ? Poverty, food and citizens’ responses in Greece

Poverty, food and citizens’ responses in Greece

Author: Kostas Loukeris The first time I travelled to Western Europe in the 1980s, I was surprised by – among other things – the fact that fruits and vegetables looked so beautiful and at the same time they were tasteless. Their shape was geometrically perfect and their colour as if painters had been engaged in their making. After some years in the then European Community, Greek vegetables improved in shape and colour but lost their taste. Gone were the days one could smell a funny shaped cucumber from meters away. Today most cucumbers are as if they are industrial products.

A Mediterranean Recipe for Disaster

A Mediterranean Recipe for Disaster

Author: Kostas Loukeris Would you have your car fixed by the same mechanics that gave it back to you before, with more problems than when you brought it in to them in the first place? Would you trust those who lied to you over and over again, giving unfulfilled promises? Would you judge your politicians solely by what they say in front of foreign delegations and not by what they do after the delegates leave the country? The Greek drama entered its 3rd phase. Memorandum #3 – the more the merrier -has been signed and a sigh of relief was heard Συνέχεια →

Greek Elections 2012: The Unfulfilled Green Expectations and The Way Ahead

Greek Elections 2012: The Unfulfilled Green Expectations and The Way Ahead

Author: Kostas Loukeris The Greek elections that took place on May 6, 2012 signaled cataclysmic political changes that mark the end of the two-party political system that ruled Greece from 1974, when Parliamentary democracy was restored, until now. Since May 6th, ‘political time’ in Greece seems extremely compact and for someone to express expectations or project future events in such a fluid environment seems a dangerous exercise. In the most recent elections, the political collapse of the Socialists and the Conservatives, the two major supporters of the memoranda signed with the infamous Troika, paved the way for the rise of Συνέχεια →
