POPULISM, POLITICAL ECOLOGY, BALKANS | Workshop, 30 NOVEMBER 2013

Populism-7-620x375

Is Green growth a solution? Can we have an economy that ensures sustainability, equalOne of the most important side-effects of the current economic crisis in Europe is the undoubtedly sharp increase of populism, a political movement which was endemic during the last decades in Europe. Some people claim that it will last for a long time, while others argue that it has progressive features as well as reactionary ones. Either left or right, populism should be a subject of study, particularly because its right-wing version is enunciated through traditional racist and fascist forms.

In Balkans which is a rather sensitive region of Europe, the Green Idea for the economy, politics, and the society, should play a vital role to encounter the difficulties of the European integration, and the multilateral crisis, and to counteract the endemic populism, and the dangerous demagogy.

As a response to the challenge of populism, the Greek Green Party (Ecologists Greens) along with other Balkan Green Parties, with the support of the Greek Green Institute, held the conference “Populism, Political Ecology and the Balkans”, in Thessaloniki, from 23 to 26 of May. The conference was attended by political scientists, sociologists, economists, activists, and politicians from many European countries who discussed about the rise of populism, and of the green movements, such as political ecology.

In order to examine the phenomenon of populism in detail and its negative consequences on the policies of Balkan countries, and more specifically in Bulgaria, the Greek Green Party with the significant contribution of various partners across Europe, and with the support of the Greek Green Institute, are organizing the workshop entitled: “Populism, Political Ecology, and the Balkans”, which will be held on 30/11, in the Venus Conference Centre, in Dondukov Boulevard 9, in Sofia. The workshop will be targeted to those who have experience and knowledge on the topics and are motivated to share them with their peers.
